Camp Seaport is a 5 day youth camp at the Port of Port Arthur at the seafarer center. The camp educates youth about maritime industry jobs. This was a collaboration among many organizations that provide this FREE camp to select students who live in the Port Arthur Area.
Nikki Fitzgerald, #TXSG Jefferson County Extension Agent, served as an educator and guide for the camp.
- toured a MARAD roll on roll off vessel from the bridge down to the engine room
- rode with the US Coast Guard and toured their facilities toured the Port of Port Arthur and the Port of Beaumont
- learned how to properly clean oil spills by the Texas General Land Office
- learned how to tie knots, read maps, about the Neches River Watershed on the Ivory Bill, and how important the ports are to the #Texas economy by Fitzgerald
The students heard from guest speakers such as engineers, deputies, Diver Dan, boat pilots, SSA Marine representative Al Weeks, U.S. Coast Guard, Port longshoremen, Galley men, Big Thicket Association, Port Directors, Port Commissioners, Texas General Land Office, and many more.
